Be the leader others want to follow

… and inspire great people to join you in doing great things

“To be a good leader, you need to inspire your followers. But how do you become the type of person that others want to follow? If you lose sight of who you are as you climb the achievement ladder, and expect people to do as you say – just because you’re the boss – then it’s unlikely you’ll inspire and engage your team.

According to leadership expert Bruna Martinuzzi, being true to yourself is what defines an effective leader.  The hallmarks of an effective leader are keeping your promises, being direct in how you communicate, and allowing people to use their own judgment”. (Mind Tools Newsletter 122 – March 17th, 2009)

I quote the above from an article sent to me from an Executive I was coaching. It speaks volumes.  He also attached this note

“This is what you are coaching me – (how to) :

  • Live my values as a leader every day.
  • Be scrupulously consistent in keeping my word.
  • Relate without affectation and concern about others thoughts of me.
  • Talk straight with self-confidence and simplicity.
  • Value substance over style or image.
  • Treat all people equally – with equal warmth, respect and consideration.
  • Be completely truthful in ALL circumstances.
  • Know what is important to me and to organise my life and work around this.
  • Understand my leadership style and who I am as a person.
  • Have the inner-resources to meet adversity with courage, a cool-mind and warm heart.
  • Shed attachment to others’ approval so I can truly start to evolve into the authentic leader I want to be.

These are the intentions of Executive Communications Coaching  I offer. Specific goals and objectives are set within the above context and to achieve the outcomes you and your organisation desire.

To lead with head and heart

You may have substantial training and education as a manager.  Perhaps you are fortunate to have a charismatic personality or perhaps your technical ability is your forte.  You may have a ream of books, articles, memberships of associations, participation at courses, enews letters that choke up your inbox telling you all the things that you could, should, ought to address?  And yet you also face:

  • repeating performance issues with your staff
  • resistance from others around your ideas
  • friction or stress in relating with peers, staff, managers or board members
  • tension around balancing work, family and your own wellbeing

Creating the link within yourself to be profoundly centered and present to both your own personal needs, those of others around you and those of the organisation is essential.  It’s a key skill and a state of character which also enables you to arrive at powerfully effective solutions in conversations, meetings with family and to resolve your own internal conflicts and access great authentic leadership.

This quality of self connection underlies authentic effective leadership and personal peace.
