Mediation at work

Harmony at work is the basis of productive, stable teams and careers.

The cost of conflict in productivity and staff turnover is enormous and difficult to measure in all it’s many aspects.

Conflict in the work place is not only awkward, infectious and divisive, it can also be very hard to find a way to get people to participate positively in sorting it out.  You may have tried warning people, ignoring small remarks, redesigning jobs or workflows, however if there is tension and disharmony – dysfunction will manifest and effect morale and results.

Holistic Mediation is a fabulous strategy where you want an ongoing, productive relationship between the two parties.  It will both transform blaming and critical talk and bring focus and motivation to collaborate.  New skills and insights will also support better relations following mediation.

The exact outcome in mediation is unknown, unique to each situation. What is essential is to engage in the process.  Sometimes this needs support to bring about and special sessions called pre-mediation are part of achieving this.

The format

  • Initially there is a private one on one pre-mediation session for each person attending mediation. This is either face to face or by telephone/ skype. Then both people attend a mediation session together in person (or by telephone if that is not possible).
  • Each pre-mediation session is one hour long. Each mediation session is 2 hours in duration depending on the parties and issues. A short series of 1 – 4 sessions is common.  If teams are involved the process may vary.

Mediation sessions

Mediation involves having a supported productive dialogue (mediation) where each is heard fully and possible solutions and creative is ideas emerge.

Mediation moves us on from win/lose thinking that is so often prevalent in conflict situations.   Instead it focuses on creating empathic connection between the people concerned and utilises this connection to bring forward solutions and strategies that suit everyone.
