What is NVC?

Marshall Rosenberg the founder and developer of NVC (Nonviolent Communication) was on a personal quest to understand how we human beings DO this thing called love?

He developed a four part simple structure that supports compassion and honesty.  It helps us to bring forward clarity, to share what is in our hearts and the hearts of others -even if the other person has no knowledge of NVC.

It only takes one person to know this model to have a powerful effect.

These four components focus on expressing

  • fact instead of opinions
  • feelings as opposed to critical thoughts
  • our heartfelt universal needs
  • clear do-able requests instead of vague wishes or demands.

Put together these four elements cultivate care, respect and connectedness.

Fundamental to this communication method are empathy and the equal importance of all.  Marshall had earlier been a student of Carl Rogers, with whom he studied the enormous healing power of empathy.

NVC has been taught all over the world for the past forty years by around 250 certified trainers and many non-certified trainers.  Linda Rysenbry, the founder of Now Relate is one of four trainers certified in Australia by the international Center for Nonviolent Communication. Meet Linda

NVC mediation

The regular dictionary definition of mediation is:

“An attempt to bring about a peaceful settlement or compromise between disputants through the objective intervention of a neutral party.”

Our approach to mediation focuses on connection before outcome and trusts the best outcome emerges from understanding.  The mediator facilitates a conversation in which each party can be heard and an understanding of each others under-lying needs is achieved.

Consistently, when people connect with each other in this way they begin a collaborative search for solutions that work for everyone.
